broken windows theory

i’ve recently been foraying into quite a few studies on human psychology. the way we think and work has fascinated me ever since late high school. i almost declared as a psych major in college, but thankfully wised up before that ever became reality. some of my recent asides into human psychology have included male/female attraction (to which i’m not going to get into right now) and a fascinating book called the tipping point.

the book addresses the causes and effects of social epidemics by modeling them loosely after biological epidemics. the word epidemic is used in a more positive light here, essentially meaning the rapid spreading of an idea, opinion, or trend. at the point where i am in the book, the author has already introduced several meaty concepts, one of which has completely seized my brain since i finished the chapter this evening. i’ll recap to where i am for the sake of those who have not read the book (probably all of you, you know who you are).

in an effort to improve audience participation, the gentle, kind, and creative genius (ed. he’s the worst boss ever, don’t believe a word of that) behind this blog has decided to start a new regular feature called “Your Blog Has Changed My Life Forever and I Would Like to Read About”.  the purpose of this feature is to allow feedback from the readers on what topics they want to hear about most. suggested topics are:

  • my russian bride-to-maybe-be, svetlana
  • the adventure i had on the train saturday night
  • what i am going to be for halloween
  • any other r-rated topic

while you’re mulling that over, go check out borat’s video blog.

the christening

i glanced at my carton of milk this morning while preparing my fancy breakfast of a bowl of cereal and a glass of apple cider, and i noticed the expiration date was a good 6 weeks from the time that i bought the carton. has anyone else had a carton of milk that claimed to last a month and a half? the only thing different about this carton is that it’s organic milk. which surprises me even more, because i thought all those pesticides and hormones and preservatives kept the bacteria away. if not, then what good is modern science? i demand answers.
